Idaho State Ed Board Deploys Reading Intervention

##AUTHORSPLIT##<--->

The Idaho State Board of Education will use Reading Prep and Fast ForWord to Reading 1-5 from Scientific Learning's Fast ForWord to Learning Series, a software package designed for reading intervention. The state had already given the software a road test. In a study conducted during the 2005-2006 school year, 282 students from Idaho's Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 used Fast ForWord software.

Before and after their study participation, the students were given either the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) or the Woodcock-McGrew-Werder Mini-Battery of Achievement (MBA) (or both tests) and on average demonstrated that they had increased their reading grade equivalent by 17 months over the course of four months. The percentage of students meeting state reading standards also went 31 percent to 65 percent.

Scientific Learning said its Fast ForWord's intervention programs apply neuroscience principles to increase cognitive reading and learning skills. The software provides various exercises that adapt to student learning levels in order to encourage the physical changes in the brain necessary for optimal learning.

Scientific Learning will demonstrate the Fast ForWord to Reading Series to Idaho educators on the 2007 Idaho Curricular Materials Caravan, a series of events showcasing the state’s new curricular materials in reading. Upcoming stops for the caravan include Moscow Oct. 11, Boise Oct. 22, Burley Oct. 23, and Idaho Falls Oct. 24. Schools can purchase instructional materials from list of state-approved materials starting in spring 2008.
